Solar Power Generator

Making Your Own Solar Power Generator

Being prepared in case of emergencies is always a good plan, but most people don’t think to include a solar power generator in that plan. Having a supply of food, water and medical needs are very important, but what about electricity?

Often, in times of overwhelming demand on the utility companies during extreme heat or other weather conditions, the systems set up to provide power to residences are unable to meet the usage needs. This can lead to brownout or blackout conditions, with absolutely no electricity available to power even a single light bulb for an undetermined period of time. Some people feel that having a generator that can be powered using fossil fuels is sufficient, but even then a supply of the fuel must be kept on hand to keep the generator running. Demand for this type of fuel will soon make it difficult to obtain, as well.

So what resource is left that demand of the population cannot deplete? There are few resources that can be continually used without being totally used up, and that are not damaging to the environment. This is because they actually come from the environment; sun and wind. Unfortunately, wind power which is extremely powerful cannot be stored for later use. Solar power, however, is equally as powerful, plentiful and able to be stored. The best means of capturing the solar energy is by using solar panels and building your own solar power generator. This is not only an effective means of providing a specific amount of energy but inexpensive as well, with costs ranging right around $350.00.

Equipment that is needed to make your own generator is:

  • Solar panel rated at 12V
  • 4 amp charge controller
  • 32 amp-hour sealed battery
  • DC-to-AC power inverter
  • Voltage meter
  • Waterproof shelter for the generator

A little bit of knowledge regarding wiring and voltage specifications certainly does not hurt; however, there are clear and specific instructions available on the internet by doing a search that can help even a novice to build this device.

Another option for making your own solar power generator is to purchase a kit and then simply following the directions supplied by the manufacturer, although it may be a bit pricier depending on the product. Either way, the battery should hold approximately 400 watt hours of energy, which equates to running your computer, small television, lamp or other small appliance without being connected to any electrical source; keeping you up and running when others are in the dark.
